Partinville was established around its post office when George W. Partin became the first postmaster in the town that bore his name. Coming events would soon prove fatal to his namesake.
In 1886, the Tennessee Midland Railroad Company received a charter to build a line from Memphis to the Virginia State line. The railroad was completed in 1889 missing Partinville about one mile to the south. The biggest blow came when the new railroad agreed to build a depot one mile east of Partinville on land owned by Henry Myracle.
|
In order to get a town established on his land, Myracle deeded approximately 143 acres to the TMRC. The railroad company engineer drew the plans for lots and streets on land soon to be known as the town of Parsons.
Partin purchased the first lot sold in the new town and land in nearby Buckner. Shortly thereafter, he moved his business to
the new town. The fateful day came on May 7, 1897, when the post office
officially moved to Parsons. Partinville, the forerunner to Parsons, was no more.
Parsons receives 56 inches of rain per year and four inches of annual snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 117. On average, there are 213 sunny days per year. The July high is around 90 degrees. The January low is 26.
The Decatur County School system consists of four accredited schools - Decaturville Elementary, Parsons Elementary, Decatur County Middle School and Decatur County Riverside High School. There are seven
institutes of higher education within 70 miles of town.
Parsons is home to Decatur County General Hospital with three other hospitals in the surrounding area. There are three public-use airports nearby and three carrier-certified airports within an hour and a half drive.
Local events include the World's Largest Coon Hunt, the Holiday and Gift Show, Spring Carnival plus the Annual Home and Garden Show.
Both Parsons and Decatur County have become areas of growing economic opportunity with prosperous farms, lush hardwood forests and inviting lakes. Residents enjoy a moderate climate with mild winters and full seasonal changes. We invite you to come visit our United Country office and explore this beautiful area.
